In 2009, Wake Forest celebrated its Centennial, having been incorporated in February 1909. Just north of Raleigh, Wake Forest retains a small town charm while continuing to grow. Downtown Wake Forest is a registered historic district with over 100 businesses in the area, including restaurants, antique and specialty shops.
Wake Forest University was originally located in Wake Forest for 122 years before moving to Winston-Salem in the mid-1950s. Southeastern Baptist theological Seminary started offering classes on the campus in 1950 and then took over the site when the University moved out.
Wake Forest has parks, recreation facilities, and borders part of the Falls Lake State Recreation Area. It is the site of various festivals that include HerbFest in the spring and Autumn Arts Festival in the fall. The North Carolina Renaissance Faire holds its annual events in Wake Forest.
