Beasties, butterflies, and men on the moon are just a few of the many offerings at the Museum of Life and Science in Durham, North Carolina. This kid-friendly state-of-the-art museum blends new technology and science in ways that generate interest and make learning fun for children and adults.
More science park than traditional museum, the exhibits - offered inside and out - cover a broad range of nature and science subjects. Visitors are invited to touch the displays and try out science experiments for themselves.
In the Sound Space exhibit, people create sound through motion, the Accu-Weather exhibit allows guests to experience a fifteen-foot-high tornado. Future astronauts can go inside of a real Apollo Space Capsule, see a life-sized Lunar Lander and authentic NASA space gear, as well as test out other aerospace exhibits.
Wildlife lovers will enjoy the Carolina Wildlife display, featuring a large collection of insects and animals native to North Carolina. While you're there, be sure to visit Sponge Bob, a large soft-shell turtle living at the museum. And don't forget to check out the museum's Munch Cam to see how animals and insects eat.
Outdoor exhibits include Explore the Wild, where wild animals live in natural settings, the Dinosaur Trail, and Catch the Wind. Take a break in the museum's Loblolly Park where the kiddies can play outdoor instruments or climb on one of the various play structures. Or, take a ten-minute train ride around the museum grounds on the Ellerbee Creek Railway.

One of the most popular exhibits is the Magic Wings Butterfly House where exotic butterflies fly freely in the tropical conservatory. Get there in the morning to watch the daily butterfly release.

Originally known as the Children’s Center, the museum continued to grow and evolve, much like it does today. The Museum of Life and Science offers classes, programs, day and week summer camp, and special events.
