Haunted NC Blackbeard's Hammock House
Beaufort
The oldest home in Beaufort dates back to 1700. Commonly known as "Blackbeard's House", the Hammock House has a long history of tragedy that goes beyond its most nororious inhabitant. Sightings of Blackbeard's ghost are routinely reported in the area and along the Atlantic coast where the pirate once sailed. One story tells of a young French woman who lived in the home with Blackbeard as his common-law wife. After he tired of her, he hung her from an oak tree on the property during a fit of anger. It is said that her screams are still heard during the night.
Other tales include the death of a young woman who was murdered by her fiancee in the top half of the house. It is said that traces of her blood sometimes appear on the stairs and nothing can be done to wash them out. Balls of light, and the ghost of a man who died after a slave he was going to punish pushed him down the stairs have been reported, as have the ghosts of Civil War Union soldiers who once resided there.
