Documentary Film buffs wanting to immerse themselves in all things doc need look no further than Durham, North Carolina. Each spring the city hosts its annual Full Frame Film Festival, showcasing documentary film and the people who love it.
Presented by the non-profit Doc Arts, Inc. and funded by private and corporate sponsors, the festival began with a small group of people. Today, the Full Frame Film Festival is going strong, attracting some of the biggest names in the film industry.
The annual event is held in the spring at several locations encompassing one city block around the Carolina Theater in a section of Durham’s historic downtown district.
The Full Frame Film Festival attracts hundreds of attendees and features more than one hundred films, screening from morning to midnight, during its four-day run. It is one of the premier festivals dedicated to documentary film in the country. Screenings include new and curated documentaries from American and International filmmakers. There are also seminars, panel discussions, and question and answer time with some of the filmmakers.
Attendees may purchase passes for the entire festival, or individual tickets to the films of their choice. Passes are purchased in advance and picked up at the festival. Depending on the level, passes range from film screenings only to screenings, parties, and premier events. Tickets can be purchased in advance, on the day of, or at the box office before showtime. Be forewarned, passes and tickets sell out fast.
While festivals like Sundance and Tribeca include all genres of film in their mix of offerings, Full Frame only screens documentaries. Varied in length and subject matter, the films are selected by the festival panel from more than one thousand entries. Ken Burns, Michael Moore, and Martin Scorsese are just a few of the visiting filmmakers from festivals past. For more info: 919.687.4100.
